Nantucket stone work is a bit of an oxymoron because if you have ever done any digging on Nantucket there is not much stone that comes up. The reason being is, when the last glacial deposit settled here on Nantucket most of the stone was already deposited before it reached our island. You can see in different areas north west of Nantucket were the glacial path last carved or lands 700 years ago in areas like Falmouth, Martha’s vineyard and Westport Ma were there are large glacial deposits of dense granite. Being that most stone is imported to Nantucket we have a wide variety of stone that has been used historically and today. There is a rich history on Nantucket of stone and how it made it to the island.
